Looking for mats for your home? We get asked this question a lot, and we know it’s confusing with so many mats out there.
No matter what mat you buy, make sure you buy from a quality supplier if you can. Also, please make sure to supervise your child at all times while they are working on skills.
Here’s a list of the mats we recommend the most, if you’re looking for something specific for your child you can always ask their coach after classes:
Pre-k/Lil’Ninja/Beginner Tumbling:
Foldable Wedge Mat: since you can fold this mat you can use it for a bunch of different skills, cartwheels down it or up, round-offs off of it, forward and backward rolls, back bends, kick overs, the list is really endless.
Tumbling classes, BHS through Advanced and Ninja:
Landing Wats or Air Mats: you always want to make sure your child lands on something soft at home, at the gym they’re landing on a spring floor which lightens the impact. For skills like round-offs, back handsprings, and back tucks where they are landing on their hands/feet you will want to have something for them to land on. A panel mat also can double as a landing mat if needed. An air mat works just as well as a landing mat, with the added benefit of allowing your child to work on more skills, the only downside is these typically take up more space and need to be inflated occasionally.
Foldable Wedge Mat: There’s an almost endless list of skills you can work on, seethe previous wedge mat listing for more skills, including those they can work on back handsprings, front handsprings, back tucks, aerials, etc. Make sureyour child can do these skills by themselves before letting them attempt the mat home.
Panel Mat: You can use this mat for cartwheels, round-offs, forward rolls, bridging up, kick overs, back tucks, and several other skills.
Aerial Arts:
Panel Mat: working on flexibility by stretching is a little easier when you have a mat to stretch on, you can also fold it to work on over splits, and bridging up on to stretch the shoulders more. Discuss with your child’s coach other equipment you can buy.
